The La Mirada Symphony Announces More Details of its First Live Concert since 2020

LA MIRADA, Calif. (Jan. 26, 2022) – The La Mirada Symphony is thrilled to announce that concerts will resume with the first performance of the homecoming season on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2022, 3pm at the La Mirada Theater for the Performing Arts. For those arriving early, a pre-concert lecture by conductor Alan Mautner will take place in the main theatre at 2:15pm.

The concert will feature the West Coast premiere of Maria Newman’s piece “Our Rights and Nothing Less,” which was written in honor of Susan B. Anthony’s 200th birthday. Maria Newman is a composer of classical music, violist, and pianist, and the youngest child of legendary Hollywood film composer Alfred Newman. She has been presented with many awards and commissions including musical commendations from the United States Congress and the Annenberg Foundation.

Other featured works will include “Lyric for Strings” by George Walker, the first African American to win the Pulitzer prize for Music; “Overture to Die Fledermaus” by Johann Strauss Jr.; and “Red Poppy Suite” by Reinhold Glière.

“I’m very honored to have Maria Newman’s music as part of our first concert in two years,” said David Derks, President of the La Mirada Symphony Association. “The majority of our musicians are back at rehearsal, and under the creative leadership of conductor and music director Alan Mautner, we will have a robust concert with original and familiar music that will give our audience a great concert experience.”

Free tickets must be reserved online at the event page or at the Theatre’s official website.
