Meet Scott Lasky
Composer · Conductor · Film Music Historian
Composer, conductor, and film music historian Scott Lasky is the founder and music director of the Famous Players Orchestra, a Los Angeles–based nonprofit ensemble dedicated to reviving the orchestral music originally heard in movie theaters during the silent era.
For nearly twenty-five years, Lasky has collected and researched this remarkable repertoire—music once used by theater orchestras, pianists, and organists to give silent films their suspense, romance, comedy, mystery, and drama.
For The La Mirada Symphony’s presentation of The Phantom of the Opera, Lasky has compiled and adapted a score drawn primarily from the original theater repertoire of the silent era, supplemented by some of his own compositions.
The result isn’t simply a modern score accompanying an old movie. It’s an opportunity to experience The Phantom of the Opera with music rooted in the same tradition audiences would have heard when silent cinema was alive on America’s movie screens.
