Gershwin’s An American in Paris: A Highlight of Our October 19 Concert
On Sunday, October 19, 2025, the La Mirada Symphony opens its 2025–2026 season with a program that celebrates the richness of American music. Among the featured works is one of the most iconic pieces ever written by George Gershwin—An American in Paris.
Inspiration from Abroad
In the 1920s, Gershwin spent time in Paris, where he absorbed the rhythms of French impressionist music and the rising energy of American jazz. Walking through the bustling Parisian streets, Gershwin found inspiration in everyday sounds—from the chatter of cafés to the honk of taxi horns. These sounds became part of his score, and he even imported real Parisian taxi horns to give the piece its authentic flavor.
The Musical Journey
Gershwin described An American in Paris as a “rhapsodic ballet,” a series of musical scenes that capture the spirit of the city:
- The Opening bursts with bright melodies that evoke the joy of strolling through Paris.
- The Blues Section slows down, reflecting the homesickness of the American traveler.
- The Finale brings back the bustle of the city with jazz-infused rhythms and sweeping orchestration, ending in a joyful celebration.
- The piece brilliantly blends European symphonic style with the uniquely American sound of jazz, creating music that feels cosmopolitan yet deeply personal.
A Concert Experience to Remember
An American in Paris became an instant hit after its 1928 premiere and went on to inspire the Oscar-winning 1951 MGM film starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron, as well as a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical decades later. Its enduring charm lies in its ability to transport audiences into the heart of Paris, through the eyes of a wide-eyed American abroad.
Now, La Mirada audiences will get to experience this masterpiece live as part of our free concert, “The Music of America,” on October 19 at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts.
