An Afternoon with the Masters

Three composers. Three distinctive voices. One afternoon celebrating some
of the music that helped define the classical tradition.

Join the La Mirada Symphony for The Old Masters Revisited,
the second concert of our 2018–2019 season. Music Director and Conductor
Alan Mautner leads the orchestra through works by Handel,
Bach, and Haydn—from the grandeur of Handel’s Water Music to the
energy of Bach’s First Brandenburg Concerto and the drama of Haydn’s
famous “Farewell” Symphony.

The Program

George Frideric Handel

Water Music Suite

Written for a royal celebration on the River Thames, Handel’s
Water Music remains one of the Baroque era’s most recognizable
and joyous orchestral works.

Johann Sebastian Bach

Brandenburg Concerto No. 1

Brilliant, energetic, and richly colored, the first of Bach’s six
Brandenburg Concertos showcases an unusually large and varied group
of instruments.

Joseph Haydn

Symphony No. 45 in F-sharp Minor, “Farewell”

Haydn ends the afternoon with one of classical music’s great musical
jokes—and one of its most memorable finales. As the symphony draws to
a close, musicians gradually leave the stage until only a few remain.
