A Grand Finale: La Mirada Symphony Closes 2012–2013 Season with a Day to Remember
The 2012–2013 La Mirada Symphony season reached a triumphant conclusion on April 6, 2013, with a full day of POPS concerts and festivities that celebrated 50 years of beautiful music. Hosted at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, the day brought together music lovers, artists, and community leaders for an unforgettable experience.
Afternoon Delight: Celebration of the Song
The celebration began at 3:00 p.m. with a free concert titled “Celebration of the Song,” conducted by Dr. Robert Frelly. The La Mirada Symphony performed selections from Broadway favorites, including South Pacific, Oklahoma, and West Side Story. Themed around classic show tunes, the performance drew a full house, and the audience responded with enthusiastic applause. While admission was free, many guests contributed a suggested donation of $5 to support the Symphony’s mission.
Evening Gala: Susan Egan Shines on Stage
As the intermission ended, excitement surged through the crowd for the 8:00 PM Gala Fundraiser Concert. Audience members rushed to purchase last-minute tickets to see Susan Egan, the Tony-nominated Broadway star best known for portraying Belle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. When Egan took the stage with the La Mirada Symphony, she captivated the audience with powerful renditions of a Judy Garland medley, “And All That Jazz,” “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” “Cabaret,” and “Beauty and the Beast.”
Visual artist Joseph Yakovetic elevated the evening’s intermission with a live performance painting, adding a layer of creativity to the event.
AfterGlow Reception: A Toast to 50 Years
The festivities concluded with the AfterGlow Reception, a heartfelt tribute to the Symphony’s Golden Anniversary. Former La Mirada Mayor Hal Malkin emceed the evening, which featured a live auction of artwork by Joseph Yakovetic, as well as guest appearances by Dr. Robert Frelly, Susan Egan, Jamie Shaheen, and provided delicious refreshments for supporters and friends of the Symphony.
