Alan Mautner — Conductor of the La Mirada Symphony
Alan Mautner is the conductor of the La Mirada Symphony. He is a cellist, educator, and leader who has dedicated his career to bringing classical music to audiences across Southern California. His work reflects a deep love for music and a strong belief in making the arts accessible to all.
Musical Background & Early Life
Alan grew up in Downey, California. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree in cello performance from California State University, Fullerton. After graduation, he began performing as a freelance cellist. Over the years, he played with many respected orchestras in the region. These include the Pacific Symphony, Riverside Symphony, Redlands Symphony, and the Desert Symphony. He has also served as principal cello for several groups.
Alan has performed with many well-known artists. These artists include James Taylor, Andrea Bocelli, George Benson, John Tesh, Crystal Gayle, Glen Campbell, Dionne Warwick, and several others. He also has experience in jazz and has worked with Terry Gibbs, Teddy Edwards, and McCoy Tyner. Because of these wide-ranging collaborations, he has developed a strong and versatile musical voice.
Contributions to Community Music & Youth Outreach
Alan started conducting in high school. His interest grew into a lifelong calling. In 1994, he joined the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA). He has conducted the LACHSA Orchestra ever since and has led the ensemble to many strong festival results. As a result, the orchestra has earned high ratings and wide recognition.
His students have enjoyed exciting opportunities as well. In 2013, the LACHSA Orchestra performed at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. This event showed the strength of Alan’s leadership and the dedication of his students. In addition, he co-conducts the LACHSA String Ensemble, coaches chamber music groups, and directs a variety of opera and theater productions. These productions include The Magic Flute, Carmen, West Side Story, Evita, Into the Woods, and The Phantom of the Opera.
Community Work and Youth Outreach
Alan believes that every student should have access to music. Because of this, he joined a partnership between LACHSA and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Through this partnership, he worked with YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles) as Outreach and Partnership Manager. The program began in 2014 and brought free string instruction to 95 fourth-grade students in East Los Angeles. Gustavo Dudamel helped launch the program with a special visit. This moment inspired the students and showed how powerful music education can be.
Alan also supports many youth and community programs. He conducts the Wildwood Music Camp Senior High Festival Orchestra. He has led the Pasadena Summer Young Chamber Orchestra. In addition, he has guest-conducted the Pasadena All-City Orchestra. From 2005 to 2009, he directed the string ensemble at Cal Poly Pomona. Each of these roles shows his commitment to the next generation of musicians.
