An Intimate Chamber Music Experience
Chamber music offers a more personal listening experience because audiences can hear every musical line clearly. As a result, the connection between musicians and listeners feels immediate and direct. This free chamber music concert continues the Symphony’s tradition of bringing high-quality live music to the local community.
Brahms and Chick Corea Open the Program
The concert begins with the Andante from Johannes Brahms’ Piano Quartet No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 80, a deeply expressive work from the Romantic era. Violinist Dolores Loera, violist Tammy Cognetta, cellist Elizabeth Wood, and pianist Laraine Madden perform this opening piece.
The program then moves to No Mystery by Chick Corea, arranged by David Balakrishnan. This work blends jazz rhythm with chamber textures, offering a modern contrast within the afternoon program. The piece is performed by Dolores Loera (violin), Tammy Cognetta (viola), Elizabeth Wood (cello), and Laraine Madden (piano).
Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires
The program continues with Astor Piazzolla’s Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas, also known as The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, arranged by José Bragato. Through movements inspired by Verano (Summer), Otoño (Autumn), Invierno (Winter), and Primavera (Spring), the music captures the spirit of Buenos Aires using tango-influenced energy. Violinist Tammy Tsai, cellist Lyubov Solovyova, and pianist Suzanne Wong perform this portion of the concert.
Brahms’ Clarinet Trio and a Lively Finale
After intermission, the program returns to Brahms with the Trio in A Minor, Op. 114, one of the most recognized works in the clarinet chamber repertoire. Clarinetist Sarra Hey-Folick, cellist Greg Adamson, and pianist Curtis Heard perform the trio, presenting all four movements of the work.
The concert concludes with Stars in the Night by Robert Greenberg, followed by a medley from Fiddler on the Roof by Jerry Bock, arranged by Joseph Rodby. Performers for the closing selections include Harvey Pittel (saxophone), David Pittel (trumpet), Alan Mautner (cello), and Mitsuko Morikawa (piano). These final selections bring a familiar and celebratory close to the afternoon.
